Sail Talk with Dee Caffari

The third Sail Talk of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is with Dee Caffari, the first woman to have sailed solo and non-stop around the world in both directions. She has completed six round-the-world navigations, three solo and three as part of a team, and is the only woman to have sailed around the world without stops three times. At the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup she is a trimmer on the maxi Kallima.

What are your first impressions of Porto Cervo, Sardinia and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

It’s amazing to be here, the scenery is breathtaking, the boats are beautiful and it’s just such a great atmosphere. Everyone’s super excited to be back racing, it’s really good to see some familiar faces and I’m delighted to be here at my first Maxi worlds.

The air is light for your first time here, it’s normally a strong mistral, but what difference do you see between the big oceans and sailing through these beautiful islands in the Med?

They’re beautiful islands but they have their hazards with the rocks and the shifts and the acceleration, so it’s very technical sailing, and the lighter the conditions the more difficult it is quite often. But it gives me time as I’m trimming to also have a look at the other yachts as they sail by because there are some spectacular yachts here and it is really beautiful.

So are you planning to come back?

I hope so, now I’ve got a taste for this style of racing and I’m enjoying it and I’d love to be back.

Any news on your future racing programme?

I’ve always got ideas, I still hope there’s another round the world in me, but I’ve been enjoying lots of different types of racing, so this is just another string to my bow so maybe some more superyacht racing.

Will your next ocean race be with an all-female crew or a mixed one?

My experience from Turn the Tide on Plastic is that a mixed crew is a really great atmosphere to sail in, it’s really positive and I’d love to do that again.
