Interview with Alberto Bolzan My Song tactician - Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2018

Alberto Bolzan – the only Italian sailor to have taken part in the past two editions of the VOR, the tough round-the-world race –  tactician on My Song, commented on the first day of competition at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2018.

The final result in corrected time didn’t see you win although you were incredibly fast today and the weather conditions seemed ideal for the boat…

We did a great job today in any case and we’re going home with big smiles on our faces. Unfortunately, the corrected time result didn’t reflect the way the day went, we’re really happy with how the group worked, with how the boat sailed and the choices we made. The result wasn’t the best but we will try to work to improve our performance over the coming days.

How does it feel to be here in sunny Porto Cervo after the cold southern oceans?

It’s definitely always a pleasure to sail here. Porto Cervo is somewhere I have always liked, I’ve raced here for many years in many events, from maxis to one-designs, and I have great memories such as the Melges 24 Worlds which was the first big result of my career at the helm of a one-design boat. It’s a place I’m tied to and it’s always a pleasure to come back, particularly when there’s a mistral wind, sunny days and flat seas.

Speaking of performance, you contributed to the fine tuning of the VOR65…

That was certainly a very useful experience and it was great to be able to use it on My Song as well. This week we’ll be looking to put our ideas together to improve the boat, which is already splendid.
