Porto Cervo, 8th June 2017. On the occasion of World Oceans Day, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) held its own Clean Beach Day today.
Approximately 20 people gathered this morning on the Ea Bianca beach in the Gulf of Arzachena to take part. The initiative organised by the YCCS, which actively encourages its members to join in, took the form of a day dedicated to environmental sustainability open to all.
The group spent the morning cleaning the coast in the Ea Bianca zone before moving on to Cala Portese on the island of Caprera in the La Maddalena archipelago, one of the most beautiful natural settings in Sardinia.
Equipped with gloves and refuse bags, the volunteers gathered enough rubbish from the beaches to fill the bed of a pick-up truck. In addition to cigarette butts, glass and above all plastic, a 200Ah battery, an empty household gas cylinder and the remains of a soundproofing panel from a motor yacht were recovered.
At the conclusion of the day all of the participants were pleased to have contributed to an event in which small, local actions communicate an important symbolic message.
Riccardo Bonadeo, Commodore of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, commented: "The annual Clean Beach Day is an initiative that aims to promote a culture of environmental sustainability. This year in particular the event is part of a wider project, the One Ocean Forum which will take place in Milan on 3rd and 4th October.”
