Attended by CNR of Oristano who held an open air ecology lesson for students from Arzachena and Abbiadori
Porto Cervo, 8 June 2022. The YCCS Clean Beach Day took place this morning, organised by the YCCS with the patronage of the Municipality of Arzachena and the support of the One Ocean Foundation, on the occasion of World Oceans Day. Taking part in the traditional appointment included in the "Blue Agenda" of the Municipality of Arzachena were pupils from the first years of the secondary schools of the nearby towns of Arzachena and Abbiadori.
More than 100 people including students, volunteers, YCCS staff and people wanting to do their bit for the coastline gathered this morning at the Tanca Manna beach in Cannigione for a day dedicated to safeguarding the sea. The event was attended by the Commodore of the YCCS, Michael Illbruck, and the Secretary General and Sports Director Edoardo Recchi.
The morning opened with an informative educational lesson, held by the CNR (National Research Centre) of Oristano, coordinated by Andrea de Lucia, during which researchers explained the effects of marine pollution to the students and the importance of protecting the environment and the sea. During the cleaning operation, despite the fact that the Municipality of Arzachena has cleared its main beaches several times, the students collected about 30 plastic bags in addition to various waste. Items were found at the back of the beach in particular, such as glass bottles, for an estimated total of 100 kilos in addition to bulky items (such as helmets, bins, pipes, scrap metal).
At the end of the collection, the students gathered once again to analyse and reflect on the type and amount of waste found on the beach.
Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Commodore, Michael Illbruck commented: "The YCCS Clean Beach Day has become a fixed appointment on our calendar which is particularly important to us. Despite not being able to hold the event for two years due to the pandemic, we’re pleased to see that participation has remained high. We’re very happy to collaborate with the local community and the region, getting new generations involved to raise awareness on safeguarding the environment. Respect and protection of the environment, and in particular the sea, should be a guiding principle in our daily lives. I would like to thank the Municipal authorities of Arzachena who assist us every year in organising this special day.”
