Porto Cervo, 16 June 2024. The WingFoil Racing European Championship was held in Silvaplana, Switzerland, from 11 to 15 June. Young Azzurra athlete Maddalena Spanu took part in the competition, with a fleet of 13 athletes, claiming first place and the title of WingFoil Racing European Champion.
Five days of racing were scheduled in Silvaplana, with one unfortunately cancelled due to lack of wind. The event was characterised by challenging conditions created by low temperatures and light winds. Following the marathon race held on the first day, in which Maddalena took first place, the following days saw the competitors completing short races, with the Young Azzurra athlete notching up five victories in total, with the discard of a sixth and a DNC. Maddalena thus had direct access to the Medal Race, where she excelled in the only race held, to take home the European title.
“I’m really happy to have won the European Championship, this result represents an important milestone for me, making up for last year when I came third. The weather conditions for racing were extremely difficult: temperatures below 3 degrees, a very light and unstable breeze that made every manoeuvre a challenge, and incessant rain on the final day. Despite the cold weather, which could have affected performance, I held on and gave my all in each race. The satisfaction of having overcome these difficulties and taken the win is fantastic." commented Maddalena Spanu.
The YCCS congratulates Maddalena on her achievement.
