Strong winds keep the Melges 40 Fleet in port

Porto Cervo, July 6, 2018. There was no racing today at the One Ocean Melges 40 Grand Prix due to strong winds. The event will be held until Sunday July 8th in the waters off the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Sardinia.

Star of the event today was the wind: Mistral at over 30 knots that was already roaring in the early hours of the morning and left the Race Committee no choice other than to call off racing today. The AP flag was hoisted followed by the Alpha flag at 12 noon and racing will resume tomorrow. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for strong wind that may die down over the course of the day and it seems probable that conditions will be right for racing.

Provisional results remain the same as yesterday’s: Yukihiro Ishida’s Japanese team aboard Sikon in first place.

Edoardo Recchi, YCCS Sporting Director had these words: “Wind speed was twice as fast as limits allow, wind off Porto Cervo is currently at 50 knots. So everyone has a mandatory lay day. Yesterday’s racing conditions were nice, 18 to 20 knots wind, and those are the conditions we should have again tomorrow. We’re expecting to run three races tomorrow and again on the final day of the event, Sunday.”

Quantum Sails is the event's Technical Partner.
