Windless day for Swan fleet
Porto Cervo, Italy. 15th September 2016. Despite spending several hours on standby in the starting area, the 125 boats enrolled in the Rolex Swan Cup were forced to give up all hope of racing today as the breeze resolutely refused to rise above 5 knots. After cancelling coastal races for most divisions, the YCCS Race Committee valiantly attempted to move the Swan 45 and Swan 42 fleets toward the coast in the hopes of completing a windward-leeward, however it was not to be and the entire fleet returned to the docks in the early afternoon. Racing in the event, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda together with Nautor’s Swan and which marks the 50th anniversary of the Finnish shipyard, will continue through Sunday 18th September.
The overall classification therefore remains unvaried with Selene (Maxi), Yasha (Mini Maxi), Music (Grand Prix), Sleeper (Sparkman & Stephens), Elena Nova (Swan 45) and Natalia (Swan 42) division leaders.
As a result of today’s cancellation, the lay day scheduled for tomorrow has now been revoked and racing will continue with the first signal scheduled for 11.30 a.m. Once again the one-design Swan 45 and Swan 42 fleets will complete windward-leeward races while the remaining divisions will be set a coastal course. A westerly breeze of around 15-20 knots is forecast to fill in early in the afternoon.
Following tomorrow's sporting programme, owners will be invited to an exclusive evening at the YCCS Clubhouse with the participation of Michelin starred chef Peter Brunel.
Full results for all divisions are available online.
