Porto Cervo, 30 May 2024. The YCCS Clean Beach Day took place this morning at the Tre Monti beach in Baja Sardinia, attended by around 100 students from the youngest year groups of the secondary schools in nearby Arzachena and Abbiadori. The event had the patronage of the Municipality of Arzachena, and was supported by the Consorzio Costa Smeralda, One Ocean Foundation, Sailors for the Sea, the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO, with the participation of the National Research Centre (CNR) of Oristano.
The YCCS Clean Beach Day has become an annual event on the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's calendar of activities dedicated to raising awareness and involving the local community, particularly younger generations, on environmental issues and specifically the safeguarding of the marine environment. The three athletes from the YCCS Young Azzurra programme - Cesare Barabino, Federico Pilloni and Maddalena Spanu – also got involved in the initiative.
Around 100 secondary school students from Arzachena and Abbiadori gathered this morning at the Tre Monti beach in Baja Sardina and were greeted by YCCS Secretary General Edoardo Recchi. He thanked the Municipality of Arzachena for their organisational and logistical support for the event, giving the floor to the council’s Delegate for the Environment, Michele Occhioni. Andrea de Lucia and Andrea Camedda, researchers from the CNR in Oristano, then gave the students some guidance on the beach clean-up, with a focus on micro-plastics smaller than 5 millimetres. The participants were divided into groups and were each provided with sieves. By the end of the morning, around 20 kilograms of various types of waste had been collected, mainly relating to macro and micro plastics, with the latter weighing less but posing a greater danger to marine fauna.
At the conclusion of the event, with thanks going to everyone who took part, two names were drawn from among students who had submitted a drawing on the theme of climate change, for the opportunity to attend a free sailing course at the YCCS Sailing School. The drawings will also be displayed on a ledwall in Piazza Azzurra on 8th June, World Oceans Day, during the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta. They will also be shared with the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO to accompany the travelling exhibition “Patrimonio Sardegna” (Sardinian Heritage), which illustrates the island's tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
