Porto Cervo, March 24, 2025. The first leg of the WingFoil Racing World Cup held in Dakhla, Morocco, from March 19 to 23 ended yesterday. Thanks to an incredible and incredibly error-free performance, Maddalena Spanu, athlete in the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s Young Azzurra program, won the event with 17 victories in 17 races.
The competitions in Morocco began on March 19 and counted five very intense days, with weather conditions that varied from too light to very intense with winds of up to 25/30 knots. The first day’s program foresaw 4 long-distance tests, but only one, won by Maddalena, was completed. Races the following day were suspended due to lack of wind making the final three days especially intense: eight races were held on the third day and seven on the fourth. By the final day of the event a total of 16 races had been run and an excellent performance saw Maddalena with 16 consecutive victories under her belt. Yesterday the event’s Medal Race took place. Maddalena was ready for the final sprint, aware that only one more victory separated her from conquest. With an enthusiastic smile on her face, Maddalena was the first to cross the finish line of the final race, winning the first leg of the WingFoil Racing World Cup.
"I had a lot of fun in all the races, comparing myself with new athletes and managing to cross the finish line with a good margin was exciting. I am very happy with the result I got and the work done during training that helped me to perform at my best. The next goal now is the European Championship in Turkey, where I will try to give my best!” is Maddalena Spanu's comment.
The WingFoil Racing European Championship will be held in Urla, Turkey from 20 to 24 May, and Maddalena will defend the title she won last year in Switzerland.
The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda congratulates Maddalena for the excellent result achieved.
