Porto Cervo, July 12, 2024. The 21st edition of the traditional Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 officially opens today. The event is part of the Smeralda 888 Class circuit.    

Today is the first day of a heartfelt appointment for the Smeralda 888 class. The 21st edition of the Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 sees 11 teams gathered in Porto Cervo from July 12th to 14th, ready for some sporty yet friendly racing in waters off Porto Cervo.     

The YCCS home teams are Giada, the boat skippered by the YCCS member Germano Scarpa and Be Cool, skippered by YCCS members Guglielmo and Vittorio Lombardi Stronati. Also present at the event is Vamos Mi Amor owned by Charles De Bourbon and winner of the last two editions of the event. The Vamos team will try to capture their third victory in a row by facing off Bedà (skipper Timofey Sukhotin,) a team that just won the Invitational Smeralda 888. Other participants include Canard a l'Orange (skipper Achille Onorato), Django (skipper Giovanni Lombardi Stronati), Gorilla Gang (skipper Andrea Statori), Kzi Mo D'Eau (skipper Jelena Krasnokhcka), Luigia (skipper Silvia De Longhi), Mathilde (skipper Morten H Kielland) and Millenium Falcon (skipper Marco Favale,) the team that placed second at the recent Invitational Smeralda 888.  

Expert sailors at the event include Lorenzo Bortolotti, Giulio Desiderato and Matteo Ramian aboard Be Cool, Andrea Casale aboard Luigia, Gaetano Figlia di Granara aboard Canard a L'Orange, Flavio Grassi aboard Giada, Francois Brenac aboard Bedà, Emmanuel Dyen aboard Millennium Falcon and Stephane Christidis aboard Vamos Mi Amor.    

This morning the crews enjoyed a Welcome Brunch at the YCCS right after the official briefing at 11:30. Racing will begin at 2:30 pm with a maximum of 8 races to be completed over the three days of the event. Three completed races will be sufficient for the event to be valid. The forecast for today calls for light breeze from the Northeast.
