Cascais, Portugal October 10th, 2016. From tomorrow October 11th to Saturday October 15th the Cascais Cup, final stage in the 2016 Egnos 52 Super Series, will be held in Portugal.
The grand finale in the 52 Super series season will be raced on the Atlantic Ocean, at Cascais. Even though Quantum Racing seems too far ahead to catch, Azzurra is currently in second place overall after a solid performance in Mahon, the previous stage of the tour that was also the 52 World Championship, with five wins out of a total of ten races. The Italian/Argentine team aboard Azzurra, the boat flying the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s burgee, is ready for the upcoming challenge
Guillermo Parada, Azzurra’s skipper, had these words: “At the World Championship in Minorca we were consistent and finished second. We can’t wait to show our further improvements here at Cascais. We want to get a strong finish to get set for the 2017 season that will start in January in Key West, Florida. We’re progressing constantly and think we can catch up to the leader now that we have worked out the performance issues that slowed us down in the first part of the season.”
Azzurra wants to retain and confirm her second place overall which currently sees her 11 points ahead of Ran Racing and 16 points ahead of Provezza. Azzurra’s navigator, Bruno Zirilli is confident: “We have been improving the boat to get ready for 2017, I have been analyzing and enormous amount of racing data and can confirm that the boat’s performance has been improving along with her results. We are confident in the boat and reasonably certain that we’ll be able to retain our second place behind the season’s leader, a boat that seems to be unstoppable this year. Cascais tends to be breezy, and if the usual conditions prevail, it’s ideal for Azzurra.”
Boat Captain Pedro Rossi is back aboard and is substituting grinder Nicola Pilastro who will soon become the proud father of a new member of the Azzurra family.
These are Vasco Vascotto’s words on the eve of the competition, day that coincides with his birthday: “This is the final event of the season for the TP52s. We’re here and concentrated on what we’re doing, but we’re also thinking about 2017, which is right around the corner. Azzurra’s season has been a slow crescendo, but we still want to capture first place. Congratulations to Quantum for their excellent results so far, but we’ll be on their heels here in Cascais, ready to catch up to them and ready for the 2017 season.”
Riccardo Bonadeo, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s Commodore, had these words: “It doesn’t look likely that the prestigious trophy for the 52 Super Series will be in our clubhouse again next year; we just sent it to Club Naval de Cascais for the awards ceremony that will be held at the end of this event. Even though it isn’t over until it’s over, our congratulations go to Quantum: next year we’ll be back to challenge them with determination and fair play. That’s the essence of sports.”
Racing tomorrow will start at 12:30 PM local time, 13:30 PM CEST. As always, fans can follow Azzurra’s progress live from the regatta course on Facebook and Twitter. Virtual Eye thanks to the 52 Super Series can be followed on the website www.azzurra.it
