Porto Cervo, 16 June 2025. Maddalena Spanu, an athlete in the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's Young Azzurra programme, has claimed victory in the second leg of the WingFoil Racing World Cup circuit in Switzerland. Second place went to Kristyna Chalupnikova from the Czech Republic, ahead of Italy's Marta Monge in third.
The event took place from 10 to 14 June in Silvaplana, spanning three days of qualifying rounds, a day of finals, and a conclusive day dedicated to the Medal Race. Five days of challenging competition brought tricky weather conditions, with very light breezes and continuous changes of direction. Maddalena led the classification throughout, alternating victories with more difficult moments in which the wind conditions prevented racing. The Young Azzurra athlete’s grit and determination shone through, however, taking her to 11 wins out of 18 races – a result that gave her direct access to the Medal Race, needing just one victory to claim the top spot overall. Maddalena finished second in the first race of the Medal Series, but crossed the finish line first in the next race to clinch overall victory in the second leg of the WingFoil Racing World Cup in Switzerland.
“It was a very complicated event, the weather conditions put all the participants to the test, me included. We were competing in very light and highly variable winds, I also had a protest which ended in my favour. In the races held in very light wind, at the lower limit, it was a challenge to maintain concentration in the stress of the moment. I’m happy with the result, I gave it my all, maintaining the lead and winning this event is an important result for my professional growth as an athlete.” commented Maddalena at the conclusion of the event.
Maddalena currently leads the overall classification for the World Championship, with several more legs scheduled over the coming months. The next event is set to take place in Turkey from 13 to 17 August.
The YCCS congratulates the Young Azzurra athlete on her excellent result.
