Almost 30 years on from the Italian debut in the America's Cup, Azzurra returned to the water. The new Azzurra project was a collaboration between the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and member Giovanni Maspero of Joe Fly sailing team: the talent of the sailing team combined with the experience of the YCCS generated a young and close-knit team, ready to compete at the highest levels.

The new all-Italian Azzurra team took to the regatta course for the first time at the Louis Vuitton Trophy in Nice, in November 2009. Francesco Bruni and his crew claimed victory in the first leg of this prestigious international competitive circuit. Having reached the final, Azzurra defeated event favourites and champions of the Louis Vuitton Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand, with a resounding two wins to zero.
The Azzurra team returned to international race courses for the second leg of the Louis Vuitton Trophy, held place in New Zealand in March 2010, and clinched an excellent third place.
